FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Alexandria, KY — April 21, 2011 — Join with the Campbell County Office of Emergency Management and 2.5 million other people on Thursday, April 28th at 10:15 a.m. for the Great Central U.S. Shake Out. More than 2.5 million people in an eight-state region and nearly 300,000 in Kentucky are expected to participate.
Individuals, families, schools, universities, businesses, government agencies, faith-based organizations, medical facilities, and community groups -- all are encouraged to register to participate in the drill, which will highlight "Drop, Cover and Hold On" and other protective actions people should take when preparing for and experiencing an earthquake.
The Campbell County Office of Emergency Management, along with other state, and federal and local emergency management agencies agree that Drop, Cover, and Hold On is the best action to reduce the potential for injury during earthquakes. The Shake Out is your opportunity to practice how to protect yourself during earthquakes at home, school and at your place of work.
Next year marks the 200th anniversary of the New Madrid Earthquakes, a series of three earthquakes believed to have been a magnitude 7.0 or larger that occurred near the southeast Missouri town of New Madrid.
As a registered Shake Out participant you will be counted in the largest earthquake drill in Central U.S. history. “We would very much like to see a large number of Campbell County residents register and participate” said William R. Turner, Director of the Campbell County Office of Emergency Management. By registering, you will receive updates about Shake Out news and information about earthquakes and preparedness.
To register and participate in the Shake Out and to learn more about Earthquake Safety go to: http://www.shakeout.org/centralus/kentucky/ . Sign up today.
